Peter Obi And NADECO/ Democracy Day.

I just read a piece by Peter Obi talking about June 12 as the fulfilment of our collective Democratic goal. I could not just believe that Peter Obi......

1. 

In 1993, at the tail end of the unending IBB series of Transition Programs, the government set up two government parties -SDP and NRC. MKO Abiola emerged as the Presidential Candidate of SDP while Ibrahim Toffa was the NRC candidate. 

IBB was a student of Egyptian ex-President Gamal Nasser and molded his trajectory to leadership after him. Nasser was a military general who planed a coup but handed over power to a senior General Mohamed Naguib to take all the international bashings that new heads of military juntas get. He stayed behind and did all possible to make the government unpopular. He then over threw his boss at the height of his unpopularity and received massive acceptance for his act.  Now the head of state, Nasser transited into civilian president. 

IBB had done same thing. He and his boys overthrew Shagari but gave power to Buhari. As Chief of Staff, he carried out some acts that made GMB regime unpopular. For example,  he sent some soldiers to invade the home of 76 year old Awo who was the undisputed godlike Leader of the Yoruba. He also invaded the home of Shiek Gumi ( the father of the present Sheik). The older Sheike was a personal friend of Sir Ahmadu Bello who also was a godlike Leader of the North. He got recognition from the Emir of Saudi Arabia as an Islamic scholar when he traslated the Koran into Fulani. In the East, after the coup, he got Alex Ekwemhe arrested while allowing the President go home untouched. How do you arrest Motor boy and let go the bus driver? The Igbo could not have like this. In addition to incuring the hate of these three major tribes, he was also hated by the political class for his anti-corruption stance. IBB like Nasser, struck at this stage and took over. Like Nasser, immediately he seized power, he assumed the name “President”. Before then all leaders of previous military governments were called "Military Head of State" 

Towards becoming a civilian president,  IBB commence on series of Transition Programs that were never meant to produce a democratic president. The first ended with banning from politics,  12 most formidable candidates for the job including Gen YarAdua, Adamu Chiroma, Olu Falae and Lateef Jakande. 

In the third transition scheme also destined to lead nowhere, he formed two government parties - SDP with MKO Abiola as the Presidential Candidate and NRC with Ibrahim Toffa as their candidate 

Unknown to anyone was IBB also grooming Chief Arthor Nzeribe to truncate that scheme also. Arthur Nzeribe formed a group called Associateion for Better Nigeria ABN. Nzeribe’s  silent  Deputy in that group was a co-Igbo man called PETER OBI. As the Presidential election was tailing to an end, ABN approached an Abuja High Court in Judiciary unholy hour of 9pm, to procure a Court Verdict that annulled that presidency of MKO and once again truncated our path to Democratic rule. It took an extra 6 years to get back on the path. Peter Obi was part of ABN that truncated our path to Democracy

By that act by IBB, diehard democratic elements would take no more. Rewane, Anthony Enahoro, Bola Tinubu, Wole Soyinka, Bala Usman etc took on the Military insisting that the transition toward democracy must be carried to a logical conclusion and the Military quit the stage. That gave birth to NADECO. The main financiers were Rewane and Tinubu. The pressure they mounted drove IBB to step aside and Abacha eventually took over. Abacha was the most despotic President we ever had. As he fought back, NADECO became stronger. Igbo are not known to fight such battles but Ndubisi Kanu, Ebitu Ukiwe, Arthor Nwankwo and (it may shock you), Chukwuemeka Ezeife with Ajasin, Abraham Adesanya, Akinyemi etc there too.  Abacha also needed men to shore him up. One of those that did was PETER OBI. They hounded NADECO. Some of the members were driven into exil while many were killed.  PETER OBI was part of the Tink Tank that planned all the mayhem inflicted on these pro democracy people.

The contribution of Peter Obi in the killing, bombing, maiming and driving away the strugglers for democracy was so impressive to Abacha that Peter Obi gained assess to his ears. Peter Obi, the opportunist started working on Abacha to transform into Civilian president. After all, he was quite aware of the initial plan of IBB. Peter Obi convinced him that he could raise a group of young men to push the ambition. When Peter Obi realised that Abacha had bitten the bait, he suggested that he be empowered financially and will not have to depend on him to run the Youths group. Abacha acquince and made PETER OBI The CEO of Tin Can Island Port. This is where Peter Obi made Billions that qualified him to become the Chairman of Fidelity Bank at the tender age of 35.

As promised, PETER OBI got one Daniel Kanu to set you a mob they named Youth Earnestly Ask for Abacha YEAA that started campaigning for Abacha to perpetuate himself in office by turning into a Civilian President. From the loot of Tin Can Island Port, he financed YEAA.  Their campaign method was to get a large mob together that marched on selected big cities. The biggest was the Two-Million-Man-March in Kano. It is instructive to mention here that this is where Peter Obi got that campaign strategy he started presidential campaign with - “Million Man March”. Abacha was on the way to achieving his goal. Six political parties had registered for the General Election. At a point all 6 adopted him as their presidential Candidate

Abacha decided to mock the Christians (at that time, the Churches had not be infiltrated by charlatans like Enenuche and Suleiman. Others like Oyedepo had not been so taken over) who were calling for National Prayers for God to remove from Nigeria the evil ones. Abacha also decided to call for National Prayers. The theme was for God to remove anyone trying to cause evil in Nigeria. There would be prayers in all Mosque on 5th June 1998 and prayers in all Churches on June 7 1998. God heard the Prayers and removed Abacha on 8th June 1998. That ended that era. Abdulsalam took over and promised return to democracy in 1999. He kept his word.
